III. He insinuated that the foul charge made against me (and Which at the time of publishing the libel had not even been investigated before the magistrate) was probably true, thereby endeavouring to incite against me such prejudice in the public mind as to render it impos sible to impannel a jury which might not have been biassed by his words. I have twice denied upon oath that there was a shadow of foundation for such a charge. No attempt was made by the defendant to justify this insinuation, to question the justice of my prompt acquittal, or to rehabilitate the charge in any form. On this point the Chief Justice said that if the Jury believed he had meant to impute my guilt, which he did not think was the case, then there was not a particle of evidence to justify such imputation.
