Publisher's Synopsis
This book incorporates technical literature on the design of roads into a textbook format. There are worked examples and problems for students, while notes and references provide up-to-date coverage of Australian, British and American road design practice in metric and imperial units. Where appropriate, the author has shown how computer-aided design can help in the design of roads.;The first four chapters cover basic principles and considerations relating to traffic, road-user and vehicle characteristics, basic design criteria, road capacity and other relevant design considerations. The remaining nine chapters then discuss in some detail the design of specific road facilities, namely pedestrian facilities, bicycle facilities, undivided rural roads, undivided urban roads, divided urban roads, intersections and interchanges. These chapters have a strong practical orientation and reflect the author's experience in the area.
