It caught in its meshes - Cardinal Richelieu, the controlling power in far - off France, and thereby shaped the foreign policy of a nation. The men of Canada in all degrees of life were more or less engaged in this enthralling pursuit; even the Jesuit priests were not exempt from the prevailing madness,2 and their donnes - the Canadian youth reared under priestly surveil lance, to assist in the missions - carried the sanction of the church into their favorite occupation.
