Publisher's Synopsis
Following his dismissal for an indiscretion with the chairman's daughter, arrogant sales executive Edward St Claire is approached by an oddly well-informed stranger who offers him a job in a remote village. Edward isn't over-keen when he learns that the post on offer is that of resident vagrant.
Upon his arrival, the first thing he spots is a well-maintained gallows on the village green. Perhaps he should turn back, but the eccentricities of the village intrigue him: the naked octogenarian, the subterranean giant, the talking roll of turf - all of which the residents seem to regard as perfectly normal. Of course, if he doesn't like it, he can always leave. Can't he? Well... no, not if the village doesn't want him to. This is a tale of enormous pies, mood-enhancing buns and an unlikely redemption.
