If such topics as these cannot, in this country, be dis cussed without limitation, and if decisions cannot be reached which should command the assent of all, the hope of maintaining free governments might as well be given up at once, for questions as important and semons must be met in every country; in point of fact, they have been met and discussed for eighty years, with the excitement of discussion not unfrequently at the highest pitch to which the interest felt in such subjects could carry it. We have hitherto passed through these scenes safely, and fully vin dicated our capacity for self-government. So far as the questions involved are concerned, we can do so again. Although Slavery is one of these delicate topics, and in volves questions the most difficult of solution, we do not hesitate to say that there is patriotism, forbearance, intel ligence, and discrimination enough to meet and settle, wisely and well, every question to which that subject can give rise.
