Rare Book
Inscribed to the front 'With the author's compliments'.A scarce study of 'the legends and beliefs of my native land' in respect of the 'fairy hordes', who have over centuries been, for young folk, 'companions and their first and best teachers'. Macdonald considers the literary tradition of such entities, with reference in particular to Robert Kirk, Minister of Aberfoyle (his 'Secret Commonwealth' compiled in the seventeenth-century but not published until the nineteenth) and in conclusion reflects that the modern world cannot admit the capacity for clairvoyance that seems to be nurtured by particular times and places.Macdonald was herself a nurse, and the title-page states that this work may be obtained 'from the Offices of the Royal British Nurses' Association' - its profits contributing to 'a Fund to form an endowment for sending out cheques to sick and aged nurses at Christmas time for comfort and cheer'.
