I must record my obligations to the librarians of the Bibliotheque Nationale at Paris, of the public library of Treves, and of S. Peter's College, Cambridge, for the loan of valuable and early mss of the Fables. Also to the distinguished archaeologist, M. Wilhelm Frohner, for the free use which he allowed me to make of his collation of the two Paris mss A and P, as well as of the Carlsruhe fragment I have not availed myself of his generous permission to reprint the Latin Paraphrast, thinking it better to refer the reader to Frohner's own edition (teubner, For the Index of words I am indebted to my friend Mr. Charles Bradburne of Trinity College.
