The lost Codex Argentorateusis was the only evi dence for the existence of the Epistle to Dz'oguetus. Nowhere in all Christian literature is there a reference to the letter or to its author. Our knowledge of its date, its authorship, its destina tion, depends entirely upon its own contents and the few indications found there are as inconclusive as they are suggestive.
