Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul to the Colossians
N the great subject of the Epistle to the Colossians our English classic is Marshall's Gospel zwysz'ery of Sanelifieafz'on. This work was first published in 1692, and has ever since been regarded as unapproached in describing faith's use of the Christ's fulness for all possible human requirement; directions 3, 4, and 12 being peculiarly valuable. We have several other works in English richly suggestive of the topic generally; Bishop Hall's C/zrz'st Mystical and Mr. Polhil's Cfirz'szzes z'n Corde being prominent. S. Bernard's Sermons to kz's Monks on the Carztz'eles is a Latin fountain of similarly directed mystical thought. For practical exhibition of Paul's teaching on personal daily intimacy between Christ and His people, Rutherford's letters have never been equalled, nor are likely to be on this side our Lord's return. In the following commentary I have endeavoured to reproduce the thought of the letter in the verbal expression employed by the Apostle. Two words determine that thought pleroma (fulness) and musterion (secret). By keeping these prominent, and giving them their Pauline adjustment to each other, the letter has been found much less difficult to follow. It is because I have found this for myself that I have ventured to adopt it in the following pages.
