Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The English Scene, in the Eighteenth Century
To attain the object in view it was necessary that the treatment of the subject should be at once broad and simple; to enter minutely into details, to offer illustrations of every statement of fact or of opinion, would lessen clearness of outline. It would have been equally inappropriate to load the following pages with references, since a view presented in a few lines is frequently the result of the consideration of many facts, and of numerous authorities. Some references have, however, been inserted, chie?y to enable a reader who desires to follow a particular subject at length, to have at hand some guide when he begins his quest.
