Considering, then, that the author of Luke's Gospel was one and the same person with the author of the Acts, that he was acquainted with the ascension when he wrote his Gospel, and must have known long before what Paul taught and received, in the many years of his familiar intercourse with the apostle, we can accept of no other explanation save that which looks on the end of chap. Xxiv., probably from vs. 44 onward, as containing a summary of occurrences which, if historical exactness had been followed, were sepa rated from the resurrection by a considerable interval of time.
