It explores not only his own deterioration, but also the impact upon his wife and family. About the Author David was born into a working-class Yorkshire family. His grounded upbringing provided stability, although a lack of siblings left gaps in social interaction affecting feelings throughout his life. This upbringing provided the inspiration for the book, although events portrayed are not autobiographical.
