Publisher's Synopsis
Exile, identity and fantasy were the themes of the 1997 Massy Lectures delivered by man of letters Hugh Kenner. This study examines the idea that Western culture has a constant need for stimulation encountered elsewhere. Kenner traces this trend from the 18th-century Grand Tour, wherein wealthy young Englishmen travelled Europe before beginning their careers, to the self-imposed exile of modernist writers, to the disembodied global journeys the Internet offers up today. Kenner takes a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on literature, mathematics, science, technology and popular culture.
