Due to the coordinate transformation there is now a constantelectric field, in the y direction, of magnitude Ey Eouo' We use m.k.s. Electrical units. Here, of course, BO means the undisturbed magnetic field as it appears in the moving coordinate system. The plasma consists of positive ions and electrons continuously distributed. We assume that the motion of an ion or electron is determined only by the force exerted on it by the macroscopic electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic field is entirely in the z direction, and has strength E(x) (depending only on x, and independent of time, in the frame of reference fixed to the wave). The electric field has the com ponent Ey eouo and also the component due to charge separation. The plasma proper is described by the distribution functions of the ions and electrons, which are time-independent, and depend on only the one space coordinate x.
