Publisher's Synopsis

This text compiled from material given by researchers for the period 1987-1992 over the territory adjacent to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A three-dimensional picture of the area of irradiation damage of pine along the western trace of radioactive fall-out is presented. The most important elements of the irradiation situation during an active phase of the incident are reconstructed. Over a series of sample sites with different degrees of radioactive pollution, the state of pine needles, buds, shoots and tissues of stems, dynamics of the state of stands, and the activity of pests were studied. The dynamics of lower layers of vegetation, distribution of radionuclides and influence of digging by animals on their vertical migration in soil were also studied. The text is primarily intended for radiobiologists and foresters.
