As is well known, the term abortion is applied by some, rather in a restricted sense, to expulsion of the ovum in the first two or three months of pregnancy, before the placenta is formed, while if such a condition occurs at any time between this period and the seventh month it is called a miscarriage; but on the present occasion I must be understood as using the terms abortion and miscarriage as synonymous, and as including all those cases in which pregnancy is brought to a termination before the child is viable - that is.
