First he draws a garden and then a boy to live in it. Then he draws three of the loveliest things any boy could want--a flute, a book, and a hoop. The boy is happy and spends many delightful hours playing in his garden. Every evening the Drawer visits the boy. One evening, the Drawer asks the boy to return his flute. Soon after, the Drawer asks for the book and then for the hoop. With great reluctance, the boy returns the three gifts. "What will I have left to make me happy?" he asks the Drawer, a tear sliding down his cheek. Then one day, the boy wakes to find that he is not alone in the garden.
