But, as too often happens among people laboring under a high degree of excitement and appre hension, the colonists seemed madly intent on rushing into measures which hastened on the very event they were so anxious to avoid. And the consequence was that they soon plunged their hapless colony into those fearful scenes of blood and woe, which characterized the year that followed the Open ing act of the story on which we are about to enter.
