Publisher's Synopsis

This book is written for the general public as a guide to The Dig, a special feature of the Canada Before Cartier Hall in the National Museum of Man in Ottawa. The Dig is a reconstruction of an actual West Coast archaeological excavation, spanning 5,000 years of history of a Canadian Indian village. It is the story of the Coast Tsimshian people.

Three chapters attempt to acquaint the reader with the scope, objectives and techniques of archaeology; with the interpretation of what is found in an archaeological excavation; and with the prehistory of the Coast Tsimshian villages and people, as revealed by National Museum of Man archaeological projects.
