Introduction: Welcome to the Show
I've been part of this ever-spinning, ever-messy, never-boring IT contracting merry-go-round for nearly 15 years now. In that time, I've seen things you wouldn't believe - systems held together with digital duct tape, budgets vanishing into the abyss, and projects managed by people who think Agile is something you do at yoga.
I class myself as the Lead Test in IT. But really? I'm the fixer. The one they call when the system's on its arse, deadlines have slipped into another dimension, and someone's lost the only working spreadsheet. I mop up the mess, deliver the impossible, nod politely at the permies still clinging on, and then vanish into the sunset with my invoice submitted.
And let's not forget the characters I've met along the way. From the recruiter who thinks Azure is a shade of blue, to the permie who's been in the same role since Windows XP, to the LinkedIn article crusader dropping wisdom bombs no one asked for. I've had my fair share of dealings with Tracy the Screening Queen, Nigel the CV Shuffler, and Arthur the Hashtag Hero. It's a circus, and every day's a new act.
This isn't a career guide. It's a collection of my real-life contractor stories, the kind they don't put on Glassdoor. The dramas, the comedy, the WTF moments, and those rare sweet wins that make it all worth it. Seen through my eyes - sharp, sarcastic, and a little bit savage.
Welcome to The Diaries of a IT Contractor-The Untold Circus. Get your popcorn ready, and tissue because you will laugh!
