Publisher's Synopsis
Compared with the US zone, the British-occupied zone in Germany has been to an extent the poor relation in terms of research. Excellent specialised collections of essays have appeared, but so far no single book has dealt with the topic in its entirety. The Cultural Legacy of the British Occupation in Germany, comprising papers given at the symposium held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in December 1992, attempts to fill some of the gaps in previous research by paying particular attention to the cultural side of the occupation and by seeking direct access to the attitudes of the protagonists. Exploring the issues has been a shared experience - even if shared from opposite sides of the fence, occupier and occupied, welding us together and providing a structure of understanding as we move to ever closer union with our European partners.
