"The Game of Cricket, in some rude form, isundoubtedly as old as the thirteenth century. But whetherat that early date Cricket was the name it generally boreis quite another question. For Club-Ball we believe to bethe name which usually stood for Cricket in the thirteenthcentury; though, at the same time, we have some curiousevidence that the term Cricket at that early period wasalso known. But the identity of the game with that now inuse is the chief point; the name is of secondaryconsideration. Games commonly change their names, asevery school-boy knows, and bear different appellationsin different places."
