Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Coucher Book, Or Chartulary Of Whalley Abbey, Vol. 3

Hallsteads is a farm near Shawforth, and lies beyond Longacres in Whitworth.

Probably the Sparrow-hawk. Ducange, voce Sparvarius, species accipitris qui busdam fringillarius dicitur, nostris Esprevier. And the sparrow-hawk is the accipiter fringillarius of Selby, and the Eprev1er of Temminsk. But it is difficult to say why this hawk should have been reserved, as it was not a neble hawk, viz. One used for the purposes of hawking.
