Probably it seldom happens that any person is able, as in the present instance, to speak of his father as having been 112 years ago in communication with literary and political men - Mr. Miles having corre sponded with David Garrick, among others, so far back as the year 1778; and it may be mentioned that my half-sister, Theodosia, whose letters written in the midst of the exciting scenes of the French Revolution appear in this volume, was at school in the Abbaye Royale (le Convent de port-royal de Paris) in the year 1786, or three years anterior to the fall of the Bastille.
