Publisher's Synopsis
This volume (the first of a set of ten) contains an extensive introduction followed by the diaries for the years 1798 to 1805. There are also short texts from 1795. Francis WittsÆs formative years saw several moves, first to Edinburgh, where he and his brother were educated, then to Germany and then Denmark. After a brief diplomatic career, which was cut short by the Battle of Copenhagen, the family returned to Britain whereupon Francis went up to Oxford. The volume ends with the anticipation of marriage.
