Publisher's Synopsis
The Anglo-Saxon peoples who settled in Britain after AD 400 had a reputation for ferocity and die-hard paganism. The story of how Christianity was brought to them, of how traditions of great variety and richness came together with their own pagan culture to create the Christianity of the early Anglo-Saxons, is one of interest to many people. The first part of the book considers the contrasting roles of the missionaries from Ireland and those sent from Rome by Pope Gregory and assesses the accuracy of the traditional view that there was serious conflict between them. The second part studies the religious and cultural achievement of the earliest Christian period in England in terms of art, prayer, institutions and educational ideals.
