This semi-autobiographical book describes the way the Bettor family sailed on a ship from the Sierk through the Frisian waters. It follows the life of Menzo, the grandson who lived in Brazil in his youth and whose life was dedicated to the woman he met on a coffee plantation. The cruelty of the heterosexual male towards his fellow man at that time was undeniable. Male chauvinism was manifested in how women were assigned to hard labor on the Brazilian farms. Jan Lukas van der Woude lived for a short time on a coffee plantation in Brazil. After returning to the Netherlands, he attended high school and spent several years in Groningen. In 2001, he decided to return to the places where he lived in the past. He met the descendants of the poor peasants that he used to live with in the plantation. He now works in the slums of Sao Paulo for several months each year.
