This is an important archive of materials for 17th-century history. It contains copies of letters written by Fairfax and Cromwell to their political masters, copies of internal correspondence between members of the New Model Army, and verbatim records of debates of the Council of Officers.;William Clarke was on the Secretariat of the New Model Army, and specifically secretary to its democratic General Council, at the time that it was embarking on its dramatic political role. Through his transcripts we may read what was said by officers and private soldiers on the broad political issues of the day as well as on the immediate tactical decisions facing the army. Among the major debates recorded in this collection are those that were held at Putney and Whitehall.
