There can be no doubt that the art of prayer, like all other arts, can best be learned by steady practice, and no better Opportunity for such practice could be found than that. Offered by Prayer Meetings, Prayer Classes, and Prayer Conventions, which are now happily becoming so frequent among us. Further, now that books are cheap and every one can read them, Prayer Manuals may be turned to very full account on these occasions. But there appear to exist at present no books designed to serve this purpose. There are an immense number of devotional manuals for use in secret prayer; there is also our Book of Common Prayer for use in public worship, but a manuel which stands midway between the two, providing devotions suitable for united prayer other than the public services of the Church, seems to be wholly lacking.
