Excerpt from The Chemical Relations of the Human Body With Surrounding Agents: A Lecture Introductory to a Course on Medical Chemistry in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College, for the Session of 1845-46
These are respectively composed of carbon and oxygen, and of hydro gen and oxygen, so that it is plain that carbon and hydrogen are the elements, which, meeting the inspired oxygen, form new compounds with it within the body, and are conveyed again into the exterior world through the lungs. This carbon and hydrogen of the organic tissue, having been removed by the agency of oxygen, must again be replaced by food containing the same elements. Thus it becomes evident that a large portion of the nutritive substances which we con sume, goes to sustain the process of respiration, and that the amount of such nutrition must be proportioned to that of the oxygen inspired - else the excess of the elements of respiration must produce repletion of the system, or a superabundance of oxygen, a proportionate waste of fibre, and in either case acting injuriously upon the healthy functions.
