Publisher's Synopsis

This remarkable book is designed to be an artist's tribute to one of the most symbolic leaders of the late-twentieth century. It is a book of drawings and sketches, offering a personal view of the scene on 17th April 2013, as the funeral procession made it's way from the chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster, passing thousands of mourners gathered to pay their last respects, to the cathedral of St Paul's. At the funeral of the Duke of Wellington's funeral over 160 years ago, Queen Victoria's lithographers designed and produced sketches of that occasion for sale to the public. At Sir Winston Churchill's State Funeral in 1965, Charles Mozely took up his paintbrush and he too produced a series of emotive sketches of that historic occasion. It was with the intention of repeating these tributes that Unicorn Press Ltd commissioned this book. Thomas J. Plunkett has caught with astonishing detail over 20 different aspects of the funeral - the horse-drawn gun carriage, the Guard of Honor formed by London's iconic Chelsea Pensioners, the readings in the Cathedral, the splendour of St Paul's interior, and many others.
