"This 43-year-old archaeological research focuses on the ceramics of Komchen, an early Maya town in Yucatan, Mexico. The study, which spans from 900 BC to AD 150-200, provides a rich ceramic history that sheds light on the development of Maya culture in the northern lowlands and highlights the influence of both regional and broader Mesoamerican tendencies. Komchen's preclassic settlement was classified into four phases: Ek (900-700 BC), Early Nabanche (700-400 BC), Late Nabanche (400-100 BC), and Xculul (100 BC-AD 150 or 200). The earliest Ek phase has distinctive slipped ceramics, indicating a recent introduction and development. This phase saw the development of a huge civic complex centered on a large plaza, showing the early stages of settled life and communal organization.
