Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Causes of Germany's Moral Downfall
HE following lectures were delivered in Meadville, Pa., on the five Sundays from November 17 (1918) to December 15. They were inspired by the wide public interest in the overthrow of Germany by the Allied na tions after more than four years of terrible and uncertain warfare. Many of those who heard them felt that the speaker had succeeded in giving a well-balanced statement of the good and evil of the German system, and expressed the hope that they might be published and reach a wider audience.
With the exception of half a dozen additional pages, they are published as they were spoken. The writer does not pretend to any originality nor to any personal knowledge of Germany except such as one gets from hur ried travel. The only merit of his lectures, if they have any at all, is the effort to understand before condemning, and to set the Germany which has given such mortal Offence to the world over against the Older and more idealistic Germany.
