Once the elements of those genres were combined, a somewhat dark and sinister detective, with an equally dark and sinister assortment of associates, developed. "The Diplomat," first novel in the series, provides backstory into Ronald, Claire (his assistant and the storyteller of the series), and others. On their first case together, the detectives learn from Interpol that nuclear weapons are up for sale and the race is on to capture a rogue diplomat and prevent global devastation.
