Publisher's Synopsis
This is the story of Jack Promise and his personal struggles being born blind and growing up in Southern Ontario. From very early on he is aware of and quite resentful of his disability. As a young child he hears of a blind woman getting struck by lightning and gaining her vision. Jack decides in his poor naive young mind that all he has to do is get himself struck by lightning and his prayers will be answered. This idea turns into full on ambition and carries on into his adulthood. A tragedy early in his life creates a pseudo-celebrity status for Jack, complete with a throng of zealot followers who apply his word and life philosophies as literal gospel. Almost despite his rejection of this reverence it ultimately forges his destiny. Enduring through all this is Jack's undying love and pining for his lost high school sweetheart, a beautiful girl named September Death who was a social outcast simply because of her name and overbearing father. All who know Jack doubt he can survive his own ambitions.
