The celebrated author of this comedy was de scended from a family of such antiquity, as to have their line extended beyond the Norman Conquest.
It IS a subject of dispute, whether Congreve was born In England or Ireland but it is certain, that he received his education In the last named kingdom. His father, having a commission in the army, on the Irish establishment, placed him when young at the great school of Kilkenny and afterwards in the uni versity of Dublin, under the direction of Dr. Ash.
