Publisher's Synopsis

This series of essays explores the common ground of neurologists and psychiatrists as viewed from one or other end of the bridge. Although neuropsychiatry has always been to some extent a link between the two disciplines it was not until the latter part of this century that the gap has closed.;The essays in this collection consider the growth in the application of the neurosciences to psychiatric disorders and to functions of the nervous systems of common interst to neurologists and psychiatrists, such as consciousness, sleep, speech, body image, memory and movement. At the same time the study of epilepsy which illuminates both neurology and psychiatry is also considered. Scientific fields of common interst to both disciplines that are represented here include neuropsychopharmacology, genetics and neurotransmitter function.;Since this book was originally the idea of Sir Denys Hills, there are also several essays devoted to him and the book is intended to celebrate his wider view of the bridge between neurology and psychiatry.
