Excerpt from The Beginner's Guide to the Microscope: With a Section on Mounting Slides
Microscopy is usually regarded as a science in itself, and one of unusual difficulty. Although its perfect mastery involves a thorough knowledge of optics and considerable acquaintance with mathematical formulae it is not so much a science in itself as a servant of all the sciences. There is hardly a science, profession, or trade to which it cannot in some way contribute by enlarging our senses to perceive the unseen, or by assisting our powers of observation to resolve the seen with an understanding of its uses. It is not what is seen, but what is observed, that is of value; and a very elementary use of the instrument undoubtedly increases the power of observation, thus serving a use by culti vating the powers of the observer in his other walks of life.
We are not here concerned with microscopy as a science, nor in a positive sense as even an aid to science, but to enable an ordinary man in an ordinary way to interest himself and his friends by giving su 1 cient instruction to make him capable of seeing and shewing some of the hidden wonders that are around us.
