MAIN BLURB:
With the amount of teaching of formal grammar/parsing etc diminished in most secondary schools, it is the experience of many language teachers in linguistics or grammar courses that university students simply lack the basic mastery of elementary terminological issues. The Basics of English Syntax: An Introduction offers a remedy for this situation, through providing a general overview of grammatical/linguistic terminology, focusing on the key terms needed for working with language. The book will cover the major areas of syntax, introduce the basic terms, and also introduce some problems of analysis. These will be supplemented with a rich data base of exercises (some or all with an answer key) drawn from everyday language use to enable the student to anchor the acquired concepts in real language.
The Basics of English Syntax can be used at a very early stage in any language/linguistics curriculum, such as a first or second semester course in a first year of an undergraduate degree in English, or in linguistics, as well as serving as a summary background to support later courses in these areas.
