Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Ban of Maplethorpe, Vol. 1: With a Memoir of the Author
The first speaker was a young lady of twenty summers and winters. The second, a man of fifty years and a little more, seemed, and was in fact, her father. He was a fine specimen of an English gentleman, and this, though soon said, means much - very much. No one knows better what it means than the English peasant, but the specimens are becoming rarer by degrees. His daughter was a lovely English girl, such as the Chinaman must have seen when he wrote about English ladies many years ago. Their beaut eons hue surpasses the bloom of spring ?owers. Their eye brows are of a delicate outline, resembling that of bills looming on the distant horizon. The colour of their eyes is of the most charming blue, and their whole deportment is calm and cool as are the autumnal waters.
