For the purpose of relieving the water shortage in the extreme south and southwest portions of Chicago, as well as to reinforce the supply for Hyde Park and Englewood, the plan for the con struction of the Southwest Land and Lake Tunnel System was decided upon by the Department of Public Works during the year 1905.
