Iron pyrites has been known as one of the constituents of coal for a great many years and investigators have had fairly good evidence that sulphur in organic combination also existed in coal. The first method proposed for the analysis Of these two forms utilized sodium hypobromite.2 The supposition was that the hypobromite dissolved the pyrites and sulphates without affecting the organic sulphur, but no proof was advanced to Show that this was correct.
