There have been, as is well known, many translations in English verse of the Teian muse. Among them may be mentioned those of Stanley, Cowley, Addison, Fawkes, Urquhart, Greene, Lord Thurlow, Moore, Bourne, and Arnold. Of these versions those of Stanley, Fawkes, and Moore are the most esteemed. They have had the greatest vogue, and on them have been bestowed the euge of the critics and the seal of popular approval. On these three translations I desire brie?y to animadvert.
