The first two volumes of Gil Blas, ' containing Books I VI were published at Paris in 1715 the third volume, containing Books VI I -ix, appeared at Paris in 1724; and the fourth, containing Books X - XII, in 1735. Ah edition of the complete work, revised by the author, was issued at Paris in 1747. Smollett's translation was first nublz'shed in 1748. In The Torld's Classics it was first published in 1907.
