Excerpt from The Admission Registers of St. Paul's School From 1876 to 1905: Edited, With Biographical Notices
IT is not proposed here to give a history Of St. Paul's School during the last thirty years, but only to note such points as are necessary for the understanding of the Registers. In 1876 the new scheme Of the Endowed School Commissioners came into force, and the Governing Body was reconstituted. Dr. Kynaston, the High Master, tendered his resignation at the Apposition of that year, and was succeeded in January, 1877, by Mr. Walker. It was decided that permanent Mathematical and French Masters should be established in place of those who had previously visited the School, and three additional Assistant Masters were appointed. The High Master's house was never occupied by Mr. \valker, but was at once converted into Class Rooms; shortly afterwards (1878 - 79) the Surmaster's house was also annexed, and a Chemical Laboratory established on the top floor. By this means accommodation was found for about seventy boys paying Fees in addition to the 153 Scholars. To this size the School gradually attained, and so it remained till removed to the new Buildings in 1884. There the numbers rapidly increased, until they passed 600, about which size it has steadily continued. From time to time additions have been made to the Buildings (but not with a view to increasing the accommodation), such as the Gymnasium with more Fives Courts, Workshops both for Carpentry and Metal Work, and the Swimming Bath.
