This three-fold policy of the fathers upon this question the Republican party sought to again introduce into the govern ment of the country. While it opposed the revival of the slave trade and the extension of slavery, it at the same time in its platform, and again through the action of Congress, and Mr. Lincoln, in his inaugural address, denied all power in the General Government to interfere with slavery in the States where it existed, and all inclination to exercise any such power.
