Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Texts of Anthems: For Use in Congregations
It is a solemn act of worship, having its lawful place in the midst of the service, wherein noble and appropriate words, usually those of Scripture, are Sung by the Choir, While the Congregation silently and reverently listen.
But the Anthem cannot become an intelligible part of Public Worship While the People remain in ignorance of the words sung by the Choir.
The Compilers of this Book offer to the People a collection of Texts of Anthems, in order that (by placing the words Within sight of all) this important part of Public Worship may henceforth be recognized as a solemn praise-offering unto the lord; wherein the Congregation may, by silent and prayerful atten tion, co-operate with the Choir in rendering unto god this ancient and stately office of devotion.
