The aim of the editor has been to preserve in the book the qualities which made it one of the most popular text-books on hygiene in the English language. As no one man can be a specialist in all branches of hygiene and sanitation, it was necessary to secure the assistance of other men. This had been done by the author in the former editions of this book, and the plan has been followed by the editor in the present edition, with this exception, however: in the present edition credit to the several eminent contributors is given here in the preface.
