Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Tests of the Roebling System of Fire-Proof Construction: Illustrated With Drawings, Photographs, and Sketches
Tests of fire-resisting, fire-retarding, or so-called hte-proof materials, have frequently been made and are often quoted or referred to in trade publications. Many of these tests have been made in ordinary brick structures with a simple Opening in the front wall cor responding to a door, and a smaller Opening corresponding to a window in the upper part of the rear wall or in the ceiling; the material to be tested forming the ceiling or roof of the structure. It is now con ceded by experts that test structures Of this character, without grates and stacks for inducing and regulating the draught, are incapable of producing and maintaining temperatures above to degrees Fahrenheit with wood fuel. As temperatures Of to de grees Fahrenheit are frequently developed in actual con?agrations, it is evident that no safe or conclusive results can be Obtained in such crude test structures.
