In observing the currents in this Strait, the general procedure was to anchor the surveying vessel at selected stations, to serve as fixed points from which to take observations. As the current was strong when running, the deep temperatures could only be obtained at slack water when the direction turned. This was also the most advantageous time to ascertain whether the direction of the flow, from the ocean or from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, had any effect upon the temperature of the water.
